What If You Find An Error On Your Credit Report?

If you find a mistake in your credit report, you have the right to dispute it in writing. Once you do this, what steps must be taken?

  1. Unless the credit reporting company can show your inquiry is frivolous, they must investigate it.

  2. They must forward the information you provide to the organization that gave them the disputed data for further investigation.

  3. If it turns out the organization supplied inaccurate data, it must send a correction to all three major credit reporting companies.

All three answers are true. Upon investigation, if the information is still deemed correct, you have the right to submit a letter detailing your side of the story. The letter will be included in your credit report.
