Looking at Student Loans

After tapping no-cost options, you may still need to take out a student loan. Before you apply, learn as much as you can about different types. The more you know, the better chance you’ll make informed financial decisions and maybe even leave college owing less. In general, what types of student loans are there?

  1. Public and private loans
  2. University and municipal loans
  3. Community and college loans

“A” is correct. Public loans are those where the government is the lender or guarantees the funds. Federal loans, such as the Stafford, PLUS, and Perkins are all public loans. Private loans are supplied by a commercial entity, such as a bank. Public loans often offer better rates and repayment options than private ones.
